Merata Mita was one of the founding members of the Advisory Board of the All Roads Film Project in 2004. A talented filmmaker in her own right, she introduced countless filmmakers to the All Roads seed grant program, grew the audience and content of the All Roads Film Festival, helped forge partnerships, and opened numerous doors for the All Roads Film Project initiative. In so many ways Merata was the road for native and indigenous communities around the world to share their stories.
Leading with her quiet, humble manner, Merata did much for native and indigenous filmmakers and storytellers and within the film industry in general. She did not hesitate to speak out for indigenous rights, voices, and recognitions; she challenged filmmakers to push their imaginations and unleash their creativity; and she advocated for creative native storytelling to all of us—filmmakers and programmers alike.
We have lost a great friend and colleague with her passing, and she will be sorely missed.
