Photograph by Diane Cook and Len Jenshel“Gardens By Night” is a meditation on what night reveals in the environment of a created paradise. Nocturnal gardens have seduced gardeners throughout history. In Ming Dynasty China, pavilions were constructed in gardens to venerate the harvest moon. In medieval Japan, gardens were created with pale rocks, sand, and pools of water to showcase that magical light—and to inspire poetry.
While we may no longer be celebrating the harvest moon or composing poetry before our sake cup sinks to the bottom of the moonlit pond, the nocturnal garden landscape is one that touches the romantic poet in us all. Our hectic daytime lives have driven the contemporary garden aficionados to enter that nocturnal realm once again.
Diane Cook and Len Jenshel are two of America’s foremost landscape photographers, interpreting culture and environment for over 25 years. Their work has been published in numerous magazines including National Geographic, Conde Nast Traveler, Audubon, GEO, On Earth, The New Yorker, Fortune, and many others. They have published numerous books of their photographs—their monographs include Travels in the American West, HOT SPOTS: America’s Volcanic Landscape, and AQUARIUM.
