An Afar nomad uses palm fronds to seal bags of salt from Lake Assal in the Rift Valley.
Photograph by Chris JohnsFrom early 1900s photographs of bazaars in Tunisia to images of urban crowds in Zimbabwe’s capital, this exhibition includes some of the finest photographic coverage of Africa by the National Geographic Society, spanning more than 100 years.
The images represent a small fraction of the rich photographic coverage taken throughout the continent of Africa. Each picture reveals an aspect of the many ethnic groups, contrasting landscapes, and rare and spectacular animals that make up the mosaic of Africa.
To this day, the National Geographic Society continues to document this diverse continent, providing grants for the study of indigenous cultures, the search for human ancestors, and the conservation of natural resources.
