Photograph by Beverly JoubertDereck and Beverly Joubert, National Geographic Explorers-in-Residence, have spent nearly three decades living alongside Africa’s lions and leopards- at a time when lions number fewer than 20,000 and may cease to exist in the wild beyond 2050.
In this sweeping look at five decades of decline through arresting video and unparalleled images, the Jouberts show the cats’ intelligence and compassion as well as their fierce dominance as kings of the jungle and makes a hear felt plea for our participation in their survival.
Living in a tent or out of a survey vehicle, they spend months at a time in the field, following and observing these top predator-prey relationships among Africa’s most majestic animals. With a story-telling style that weaves together Beverly’s photography and sound recordings with Dereck’s film footage and writing, this exhibition with its stunning footage and intimate fine art prints offer a compelling and poetic case for stewardship of these threatened species.
