From the desolate shores of Namibia’s Skeleton Coast to the wooded slopes of South Africa’s Drakensburg Mountains, photographer and National Geographic Editor in Chief, Chris Johns, crisscrossed southern Africa to examine a world in transition—a world seeking to achieve a balance between the demands of progress and the desire to conserve a natural legacy unique on our planet.

Johns’ images tell the story of Africa today—the complex relationships among diverse peoples, remarkable wildlife, and breathtaking landscapes. “Wild at Heart” also looks ahead to Africa’s problematic yet promising future, where, with good fortune and good management, human progress can coexist with the natural legacy that makes Africa unique in the world.
