To mark World Oceans Day, National Geographic presents a preview screening of The End of the Line, followed by a panel discussion with experts, including National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence Sylvia Earle, one of the world’s most respected scientific voices on the health of our oceans; National Geographic Fellow Enric Sala, a marine ecologist and leading advocate of sustainable fisheries; Barton Seaver, a local chef and sustainable seafood champion; and Mike Hirshfield, Senior Vice President, North America, and Chief Scientist for Oceana, an organization dedicated to protecting and restoring the health of the world’s oceans.

The first major documentary about the imminent peril facing our world’s oceans, The End of the Line had its world premiere at the 2009 Sundance Festival, and will be released June 19. The film criss-crosses the globe, combining beautiful underwater footage with shocking scientific testimony to paint an alarming picture of the state of the sea. Based on the book by Charles Clover, The End of the Line examines the imminent extinction of bluefin tuna, brought on by increasing western demand for sushi; the impact on marine life resulting in huge overpopulation of jellyfish; and the profound implications of a future world with no fish that would bring certain mass starvation. The film also addresses measures that all of us can take to reverse the decline of our oceans.
