The award-winning documentary, America’s Lost Landscape: The Tallgrass Priarie (2006, 60 min), tells the complex story of one of the most astonishing alterations of nature in human history: the transformation of North America’s 240 million acres of tallgrass prairie to farmland, which not only affected the biosphere, but had dire implications for the region’s Native American peoples. The film also highlights prairie preservation efforts and explores how the tallgrass prairie ecosystem may serve as a model for a sustainable agriculture of the future.

Following the screening, Betsy McLane, Director Emeritus of the International Documentary Association, will moderate a discussion including writer and director David O’Shields, Michael Rosenfeld, President, Programming of National Geographic Television, and Susan Cohen, Film Liaison Officer for the Feature Film Service of the Cultural Programs Division of the U. S. Department of State.

This screening is part of the American Documentary Showcase, a program of the U.S. Department of State administered by the University Film and Video Association (UFVA) in partnership with the International Documentary Association (IDA) to bring the best of U.S. documentary filmmaking to international audiences. This showcase will travel to nearly 30 countries this year.
