Working as a team for more than 25 years, Carol Beckwith and Angela Fisher are in a race to photograph and document sacred tribal ceremonies across Africa before the ancient ways are lost in the vast cultural melting pot.

These two intrepid explorers are making their way by foot, train, camel, dugout canoe, and 4×4 from the tip of Swaziland to the mountains of Morocco. They’re living among indigenous peoples and earning their trust to document the sacred ceremonies that mark their lives. In doing so the duo is preserving cultural traditions and stories that would almost certainly be lost as even remote corners of Africa feel the inexorable pull of modernity.

Fisher and Beckwith’s pioneering work has garnered countless awards, media attention, and the critical praise of artists, politicians, and peacemakers worldwide. According to the Wall Street Journal, “these two Western women have gone further and deeper into tribal Africa than any photographers have gone before.”

African Ceremonies: Documenting a Vanishing World
Ten years in the making, this massive two-volume book set and traveling exhibition, African Ceremonies, tells the story of the first 93 ceremonies Beckwith and Fisher covered in 26 countries. Honored by the United Nations Society of Writers, the photographers received its Award for Excellence for the books. This presentation offers the most powerful experience of the photos and the stories they tell.

    Lamu

Located off the coast of northern Kenya, Lamu is one of the original Swahili settlements along the East African coast, dating back to the 10th century. Once a major port and trading post, Lamu has been influenced by many countries, from the Gulf States to the Far East, and has seen many visitors, including Portuguese explorers, Indian traders and Omani Arabs. They all left their mark, but also contributed to the rich diversity of this remote island paradise today.
