In the two decades since Lisa Ling started her television career at the age of 16, she has covered a spectrum of issues and interviewed people ranging from global heads of state to Hollywood’s A-list. She is currently Oprah’s field correspondent and contributor to National Geographic’s award-winning series Explorer, CNN‘s Planet in Peril, and ABC‘s Nightline, and is a contributing editor for USA Today’s Weekend magazine. She was also a co-host of ABC‘s hit daytime talk show, The View, and reporter for Channel One News. In 2010, Ling will have a series on the new channel, OWN: the Oprah Winfrey Network.
Known for her passionate yet balanced coverage of stories mainstream media tend to overlook, Lisa is fearless in the field. She has gone undercover in North Korea to glimpse life inside the oppressive regime of Kim Jong Il, examined the complex issues surrounding China’s one-child policy, traveled to Israel to meet families of suicide bombers, and interviewed leaders of Nigeria’s biggest rebel movement. She also brings to light issues closer to home, including the explosion of violence caused by the MS-13 gang.
An extremely well-received speaker, Ling encourages us to cultivate a global perspective, opening our hearts and minds to the world around us.
Presentation Topics
Open Heart, Open Mind
Known for reporting on tough issues mainstream media is likely to ignore, Ling shines the light on harsh realities and champions true heroes. In this presentation, she encourages us to cultivate a global perspective, opening our hearts and minds to the tough issues beyond the safety of our personal lives, becoming better, more engaged world citizens in the process.
China’s Lost Little Girls
As a result of China’s one-child policy, thousands of baby girls are abandoned in China every year, just for being girls. Right now in the U.S., there are more foreign adoptees from China than any other country in the world. Ling has covered China for more than a decade; hear her take on this phenomenon and the consequences that the rapidly growing gender imbalance may have on the world’s fastest growing economy.
