One of the world’s top natural history photographers, Mattias Klum’s advocacy on behalf of biodiversity earned him a medal from the King of Sweden and designation as a 2008 Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum, an honor shared with Sergey Brin and Larry Page, co-founders of Google.
Klum has documented Borneo for over 20 years. For a November 2008 National Geographic article and upcoming film, Klum returned to document the rampant deforestation that has already claimed 75 percent of Borneo’s lowland rain forest and now threatens its native orangutans and pygmy elephants.
A powerful voice in conservation and one of National Geographic’s most dynamic storytellers, Klum delivers a resonant and cautionary message, encouraging us to lighten our footprint on this Earth and to consider the legacy we will leave to those who follow.
Presentation Topics
Being There: Inspiring Conservation of our Natural World
The natural world as we know it is dying. Klum reports from the front lines of the battle, with powerful images, film clips and compelling stories designed to stir emotions and spark activism. This sweeping journey touches all seven continents: from Borneo, to Galapágos and from the Baltic Sea to Antarctica.
Whatever It Takes
With ambition, modesty, respect, and immaculate preparation, Klum navigates the tangled webs of government politics, environmental hardship, and funding to get the story. Here he shares the fruits of his labors and coaches organizations to uncover their core value in order to inspire similar organization-wide commitment to meeting honoring that ideal.
Growth Strategies: It’s a Jungle Out There
Owing part of his success to time spent without his camera, Klum meets with corporate audiences worldwide to share universal strategies for developing talent and strengthening the core of an organization from interns to CEOs.
Humans and Horses: An Eternal Bond
For as long as we can remember, horses have been humanity’s partner and friend. Drawing from his book, Horse People, this presentation explores cultural traditions, spiritual connections, and the bond that develops between creatures when we make ourselves truly vulnerable to one another.
The Sacred Sanctuary of Ladakh
Journey inside a sacred Buddhist monastery with Klum—aided by His Holiness, the Dalai Lama, as the first journalist to be welcomed in 100 years—located on an ancient trade route that once linked Ladakh and Tibet. Now in forced isolation, the monastery is a stronghold for peace and prayer.

Borneo rainforests are threatened. National Geographic photographer Mattias Klum calls the island “one of the most tragic ecological disasters in history.”
The majestic forests are vanishing in smoke and sawdust, but there’s still hope for the island’s fabled biodiversity—if the palm oil rush can be slowed.
He was inspired by fossils of armadillos and sloths.
