Photograph by Reza
For over 30 years Reza has been capturing the beauty and turmoil of the Middle East, Asia Africa, and Europe through his iconic images and vivid stories.
Reza taught himself the principles of photography at the age of 14 while capturing rural society and architecture in his homeland of Iran. He was arrested several times, persecuted, tortured, and exiled from his native country, but he never stopped believing in the power of photography and the value of humanity.
As a humanitarian, photojournalist, and National Geographic Fellow, Reza is dedicated to empowering weakened societies, especially women and children, through his organization Aina (The Mirror). He believes an independent press will contribute to a free and open society.
Reza has served as a consultant to the United Nations humanitarian program in Afghanistan and is a regular correspondent for BBC Persian. He has been honored with the Chevalier de I’Ordre du Mérite, the Lucie Award for Achievement in Documentary, the Infinity Award for Journalism at the International Center of Photography, an honorary doctorate from the American University Paris and the University Missouri-Columbia School of Journalism Honor Medal for Distinguished Service in Journalism “in recognition of his lifelong contributions, through brilliant photojournalism, to justice and dignity for the world’s citizens.”
