A lead scientific consultant for National Geographic’s Great Migrations series, and a professor and researcher at Swansea University, Dr. Rory Wilson studies some of the world’s most enigmatic and fascinating creatures. He has published over 200 scientific articles, and is the inventor of a tiny device that, when attached to an animal, records all manner of information about its movement. Much of his work is focused on learning everything possible about endangered species and their habitats in order to find ways of preserving their populations.
Rory’s work takes him to some extreme habitats, from the Poles to the Equator, and from the deep ocean to high mountain ranges. He studies such dangerous or bizarre creatures such as leopards, sharks, albatrosses, elephant seals, armadillos, and sloths. He survives to tell the tales of such life-threatening situations as being rushed by hundreds of fur seals on a remote island off the coast of Namibia.
Alongside National Geographic Emerging Explorer Brad Norman, Rory has studied whale sharks at Australia’s Ningaloo Reef, attaching the spy technology he developed in order to learn more about the secret life of the world’s largest living fish species.
With his trademark wit, Dr. Wilson shares highlights of his research, revealing surprising secrets about the way animals live.
National Geographic Channel’s Great Migrations is a seven-part global television event that takes viewers around the world on the arduous journeys millions of animals undertake to ensure the survival of their species. Coming in November.
The Rolex Awards recognize pioneers whose work contributes to the betterment of mankind. Learn more about Rory’s research and see a video of him at work in the field.
