Author David Grann
Photograph by Matt RichmanIn 1925 famed British explorer Percy Fawcett, one of the last in a romantic tradition of gentleman explorers going back to the Victorian era, ventured with his son and one other companion into the Amazon rainforest in search of “the Lost City of Z”—an advanced ancient civilization which he believed to be located deep in the jungle, hidden from the outside world. Fawcett’s quest captured the world’s imagination, and his disappearance without a trace is considered one of the great unsolved mysteries of exploration. In his new book The Lost City of Z, New Yorker writer David Grann, aided by a treasure trove of previously-hidden diaries, investigated the Fawcett mystery, even mounting his own expedition in search of clues. In a riveting presentation, Grann will share Fawcett’s story, and recount his own harrowing journey into the Amazon.
