Photograph by George WellsIn the hundred years since Robert Peary claimed to be the first to reach the North Pole, controversy has continued to swirl around his 1909 expedition, with some critics charging that Peary falsified his epic feat. In 2005, British explorer Tom Avery retraced Peary and Matthew Henson’s route, using Inuit sled dogs and custom-built wooden sleds to replicate the 1909 journey. Avery’s team matched Peary’s feat, with five hours to spare. Avery will give a firsthand account of his Arctic trek, and the light it may shed on the events of 1909.
