Photograph by Samuel SvensäterOne of the most highly regarded natural history photographers, whose advocacy on behalf of biodiversity earned him a medal from the King of Sweden and designation as a 2008 Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum, Mattias Klum has a special passion for Borneo. He has spent 20 years exploring its unique flora and fauna and producing magazine articles, books, and documentary films. For a November 2008 National Geographic article, Klum returned to Borneo once more—this time to document the rampant destruction that has already claimed 75 percent of Borneo’s lowland rain forest and now threatens its native orangutans and pygmy elephants, as well as the reclusive, forest-dwelling Penan tribe. Klum’s exposé of rampant logging and the burgeoning oil palm plantations is a call for all of us to examine the roles we play, often unknowingly, in the demise of one of nature’s last Edens. He will also share heartwarming stories of care as volunteers work tirelessly to rescue and rehabilitate orangutans orphaned and stranded in the wake of logging.
With stunning images and his trademark charisma and humor, Klum, one of National Geographic’s most popular storytellers, brings Borneo’s majestic ecosystem to life. He also presents simple suggestions about how we might reconsider our choices as consumers and increase the odds that the remaining wild parts of Borneo might survive for generations to come.
