Barry Clifford
Photograph by Margot CliffordHaving discovered historic shipwrecks around the world, Barry Clifford has brought our seafaring past to life. In 1984, after several years of research and exploration, Clifford discovered the Whydah—the only verified pirate shipwreck ever found in U.S. waters. Lost in a storm off Cape Cod in 1717, the Whydah (a one-time slave vessel) has yielded so far more than 100,000 artifacts—including the Whydah’s bell, gold coins, and a pistol—helping to illuminate the world’s understanding of pirates. The story of the Whydah has been made into a film, Pirates of the Whydah, and a traveling exhibition, Real Pirates, at The Field Museum through October 25, 2009.
In this special appearance, Clifford will offer a unique glimpse into the Age of Piracy, and explain what the ship and its artifacts reveal about the real lives of the men who sailed under the black flag.
