Ed Viesturs
Photograph by Jake Norton/First AscentA legend in the international mountaineering community for his mastery of high-altitude climbing, Ed Viesturs assured himself of a permanent place in the record books in 2005 when he completed Endeavor 8000—a 16-year quest to climb all 14 of the world’s 8,000-meter peaks without the use of supplemental oxygen. With his successful summit of Annapurna, Viesturs became only the fifth person ever and the first American to accomplish this feat, which he described in his National Geographic book Himalayan Quest. Rather than rest on his laurels, however, Ed has continued climbing, recently completing his seventh summit of Mt. Everest as part of an all-star team that designed the gear used in the ascent.
Viesturs will recount the highlights of his Endeavor 8000 climbs, explaining why he prefers to climb without using supplemental oxygen, and sharing the unforgettable experience of reaching the world’s highest places.
