Photograph by Jeff RhoadsJennifer Jordan’s new book, The Last Man on the Mountain: The Death of an American Adventurer on K2, tells the story of Dudley Wolfe, an American socialite, who in 1939 attempted to summit K2, only to become its first victim when he was abandoned—dehydrated and suffering from altitude sickness—at 25,000 feet. Jordan follows Wolfe from the parlors of Boston to one of Earth’s most forbidding landscapes, in a tale of adventure and tragedy. Author of the book Savage Summit, Jordan has lived at the base of K2, where in 2002 she discovered Wolfe’s remains.
