Jean-Michel Cousteau
Photograph by Carrie Vonderhaar/OFSSince the age of seven—when he was “thrown overboard,” scuba gear and all, by his famous father—Jean-Michel Cousteau has been exploring the ocean realm. The son of the legendary Jacques Cousteau, Jean-Michel has carried on the family tradition of ocean exploration and advocacy. An award-winning filmmaker, one of his documentaries helped persuade President George W. Bush to declare the Northwest Hawaiian Islands a Marine National Monument. Most recently, Jean-Michel has written My Father, The Captain: My Life With Jacques Cousteau, published by National Geographic Books. Celebrating the centennial of Cousteau’s birth, the biography takes an open and intimate look at the life Jean-Michel shared with his father, and the legend he has taken it on himself to carry.
