Photograph by Frans Lanting“As a chronicler of natural history today, Frans Lanting is a singular, extraordinary talent. He has the mind of a scientist, the heart of a hunter, and the eyes of a poet.” – Thomas Kennedy, former director of photography at National Geographic.
For more than two decades Frans Lanting has documented wildlife and our relationship with nature in environments from the Amazon to Antarctica. In 2007, completed his most ambitious project to date, Life: A Journey Through Time, encompassing a book, website, and a multimedia performance set against the backdrop of specially composed music by Phillip Glass. Lanting’s goal was to tell the story of life through photographic images—from delicate jellies to spiny octopus trees, and from steaming jungles to shimmering coral reefs. The Life Project is a testament to the magical beauty and enduring miracle of our living planet. This glorious celebration of life inspires and informs by illustrating the spectrum of biodiversity from microscopic worlds to nature’s greatest creatures, and by demonstrating the web of life on which our survival depends.
