After graduating from Oxford University with a literature degree, Emily Ainsworth chose a startling career path. She joined a Mexican circus as the dancer “Princess Aurora,” gaining a privileged insight into a world of magic, masquerade, and skill. Since then, this National Geographic Young Explorer grantee has established herself as an anthropologist/photographer who documents the lives of those who defy social normality. From living with Mongolian nomads to exploring hidden corners of Rio de Janiero, where she sambaed to the top of several carnival floats, to documenting India’s vanishing magicians: a tribe of sword swallowers, illusionists and snake charmers, whose slum settlement, a byzantine maze nestled under a flyover in a corner of old Delhi, is set for demolition, Emily will share her adventures in worlds vastly different from our own.
