Tim Samaras
Photograph by Rebecca Hale/National GeographicOn Saturday, July 11, severe storms researcher Tim Samaras will visit the Fairmont Scottsdale to lead morning and afternoon National Geographic-inspired activities for children ages 5–12 who are staying with their parents at the Fairmont Scottsdale that weekend and who are enrolled in the NG Explorers Camp. There is also an event designed for the whole family on Saturday night! Fees apply for these programs.
Tim Samaras is a severe storm researcher and his harrowing mission is to predict a tornado’s track, arrive before it hits, deploy a probe he has designed directly into the twister’s path… and then get out of the way. Tim spends two months of the year in the Midwest’s Tornado Alley in a van packed with weather recording instruments. Successfully placing his probes, he can gather data to more accurately predict the tornado’s path. Since the current warnings average a slim 13 minutes, every second counts in the race to save lives against these deadly winds. He is also a lightning expert and this year, National Geographic Books will release Tornado Hunter, about his work. This is the perfect time for Tim to visit the Valley of the Sun, as July is typically right in the thick of Arizona’s monsoon season.
PLEASE NOTE: The National Geographic Explorers Camp is available exclusively to kids of overnight guests of the resort. To view the Fairmont Scottsdale’s summer packages and promotions, click here.
