Dr. Mireya Mayor
Photograph courtesy The History ChannelOn Saturday, August 8, primatologist and TV host Mireya Mayor will visit the Fairmont Scottsdale to lead morning and afternoon National Geographic-inspired activities for children ages 5–12 who are staying with their parents at the Fairmont Scottsdale that weekend and who are enrolled in the NG Explorers Camp. There is also an event designed for the whole family on Saturday night! Fees apply for these programs.
How does a city girl and former NFL cheerleader who had never been camping, find herself sleeping in a hammock in the rain forest, being charged by gorillas, chased by elephants, pawed by leopards, and scaling cliffs? Curiosity, grit and determination propelled this “female Indiana Jones” to follow her passion. Her journey led her to discover the smallest primate in existence, a tiny mouse lemur (Microcebus), in Madagascar, and her work for National Geographic Explorer earned her two Emmy Award nominations. As a result of her discovery and work with the government of Madagascar, the prime minister established a national park to help protect the new species, conserving 10 percent that remains of the African island nation’s once vast forest. Beginning this spring, Mayor will star in the new highly acclaimed History Channel series Expedition Africa.
PLEASE NOTE: The National Geographic Explorers Camp is available exclusively to kids of overnight guests of the resort. To view the Fairmont Scottsdale’s summer packages and promotions, click here.
