Created in 1994 as a cross-cultural exchange program with the Soweto Dance Theatre of Johannesburg, South Africa, Step Afrika! has grown into a beloved Washington institution. The company fuses traditional African gumboot dance, practiced by South African mine workers, with “stepping,” a percussive style of dance originated by African American college students. Step Afrika! regularly performs to sell-out audiences in DC, South Africa, and the UK. The company will show its best moves in this dazzling evening performance, before which you can visit America I AM at the Museum. Exhibit will be open until 7 p.m.
Presented in conjunction with the National Geographic Museum exhibition America I AM: The African American Imprint. To buy tickets ($6 – $12) for America I AM, click here.
For a $35 combination ticket to America I AM and the evening performance of Step Afrika!, call the Ticket Office at +1 202 857 7700. Not available online.
