How did an Anglo-Saxon king show off his power? Sure, having a castle and lots of gold helped, but owning and training birds of prey skilled to pluck other birds out of the air—that was real authority! Falconry is not so brutal today, but it still reveals the majestic and powerful beauty of these creatures. Come learn about the history of this elite sport of kings and meet some feathered friends from Earth Conservation Corps.
This workshop is presented in conjunction with the exhibition Anglo-Saxon Hoard: Gold from England’s Dark Ages. The event will take place in the National Geographic Courtyard.
About the Presenter
Earth Conservation Corps is a nonprofit youth development and environmental service organization located where the heavily polluted Anacostia River flows through our nation’s capital’s most disadvantaged communities. Since 1992 they have been successfully reclaiming two of America’s most endangered resources— our youth and our environment. ECC’s Raptor Education Program is one of their most popular education programs. ECC youth have the opportunity to learn how to handle live non-releasable birds of prey and give presentations to the community about raptors and their connection to the environment.
