Have you ever wondered how airplanes can fly through the air? Why can birds fly but humans cannot? Join participants of this family workshop in learning the basic principles of flight by examining the trials, failures, and successes of over 1000 years of flight fascination. From Abbas Ibn Firnas, Alberto Santos-Dumont, the Wright brothers, and modern-day engineers, humans have consistently strived to achieve what their own physical limitations hindered—flight! Participants will receive the opportunity to put their own creativity and ingenuity to the test to create their own aircraft.
Presented in conjunction with 1001 Inventions: Discover the Golden Age of Muslim Civilization, our programs explore the science, technology, engineering, and mathematic accomplishments of those living in the Muslim world from the 7th to the 17th centuries. These hands-on workshops show modern applications of historic innovations and provide unique connections to the world we live in.
