Based on a short story by the great Peruvian writer Jose Maria Arguedas (whose centenary is also being celebrated this year), Gabriela Yepes’ short film Danzak tells the story of Nina, a young Peruvian girl whose father, a master of the traditional Andean Scissors Dance, is dying of a respiratory ailment. Her loyalty to her father, who is determined to pass the tradition on to her, causes her to defy her mother. The role of Nina is played by Hellen Sly Sanchez, who is a professional Scissors Dance performer (known as “The Whirlwind of Mayo Luren”) in real life. The screening will be followed by a live demonstration of the Scissors Dance.
Co-presented with the Embassy of Peru.
