Winter Mobile Hero Image

Steve Winter

Wildlife photographer Steve Winter has spent over 20 years leading photographic expeditions to remote locations around the world on a mission to save big cats.

Winter’s father gave him his first camera at the age of seven – there was no turning back. He eventually went on to graduate from the Academy of Art and the University of San Francisco, and signed on as a photojournalist for Black Star Photo Agency. Since then, he has produced stories for GEOTimeNewsweekFortuneNatural HistoryAudubonBusinessWeekScientific AmericanStern, and National Geographic, among others. He has covered many subjects for National Geographic, including Cuba, Russia’s giant Kamchatka bears, and life along Myanmar’s Irrawaddy River. However, Winter is best known and celebrated for his photography and conservation efforts around five big-cat species: jaguars, cougars, leopards, snow leopards, and—the most critically endangered of all—tigers.

Winter’s dedication to the protection of these iconic animals has made him a cornerstone of the National Geographic Big Cats Initiative, a long-term commitment by the Society to stop poaching, preserve habitats, and support education to halt extinction. In 2013, National Geographic published Winter’s photography book Tigers Forever: Saving the World’s Most Endangered Cat. Winter has been named BBC Wildlife Photographer of the Year and BBC Wildlife Photojournalist of the Year. He won first prize in the nature story category from World Press Photo in 2014 and 2008 (for the snow leopard photo that would become synonymous with Apple’s OS of the same name). He is also a two-time winner of Picture of the Year International’s Global Vision Award. He lectures globally on photography and conservation issues and has appeared on numerous global media outlets, including CBS Nightly News60 MinutesNPRBBC, and CNN.
