Garrett Oliver

Brewmaster, Author

James Beard Award winner Garrett Oliver is the brewmaster of the Brooklyn Brewery and editor of the award-winning book The Oxford Companion to Beer (2011), the first major reference work to investigate the history and vast expanse of beer and one of the foremost global authorities on the subject.

Oliver began brewing professionally at Manhattan Brewing Company in 1989 as an apprentice and was appointed brewmaster there in 1993. He soon became widely known for his flavorful interpretations of traditional brewing styles and as an avid and entertaining lecturer and writer on the subject of beer. Serving as brewmaster for the Brooklyn Brewery since 1994, many of Oliver’s beers have won national and international awards. He has served as a judge for the competition of the Great American Beer Festival for 23 years, and has been a perennial judge for the prestigious Great British Beer Festival competition and The Brewing Industry International Awards.

Oliver’s book The Brewmaster’s Table: Discovering the Pleasures of Real Beer with Real Food (2003) was the winner of the 2004 International Association of Culinary Professionals Book Award and was a finalist for the James Beard Foundation Book Awards. The New York Times called his most recent book “a treasure trove” and noted ”The Oxford Companion to Beer is a definitive resource not just for beer enthusiasts but for amateur brewers, professional brewers and the thousands of restaurants that serve great beers but are staffed by people who may know little about them.” In 2014 Oliver was honored to be the first beer professional to win a James Beard Award in the category of “Outstanding Wine, Beer, or Spirits Professional.”

Garrett is funny, insightful and surprising. He has tasted beers more than 130 years old, he brews special beers for Per Se and Eleven Madison Park and every year leads tastings for National Geographic Live. Garrett has also appeared at the American Museum of Natural History, MassMoca, The Jewish Museum, Blackberry Farm, and many other great restaurants and institutions. More importantly, he shows you something brand new to love.

Oliver has hosted more than 1,000 craft beer tastings, beer-pairing dinners, and cooking demonstrations in 17 countries. Trust him to craft an informative, entertaining, and custom-tailored taste experience for your guests.
